
‘deteriorate’
‘deteriorate’ (verb, formal) does not take an object (it is intransitive)
You can say:
‘The situation deteriorated’. (subject + verb)
But you cannot say:
‘I deteriorated the situation’. (subject + verb + object)
‘This deteriorated the environment’ (subject + verb + object)
(you can say ‘I made the situation worse’ ‘This will destroy/harm the environment).
Good examples for IELTS:
Air quality is rapidly deteriorating in our cities.
Living conditions here have seriously deteriorated in the past few years.
Common Mistakes
1. This problem has severely deteriorated my health.*
Correction:
- My health has seriously deteriorated due to this problem.
