‘The situation deteriorated/ got worse.’

‘deteriorate’ (verb, formal) does not take an object (it’s intransitive)

So you can say:

‘The situation deteriorated’.

But you cannot say:

‘I deteriorated the situation’.

(you can say ‘I made the situation worse’).

Good examples for IELTS:

Air quality is rapidly deteriorating in our cities.

Living conditions here have deteriorated in the past few years.

The economy deteriorated in August, with orders for manufactured goods falling [Task 1 Graphs]
