‘The least’ vs ‘the lowest’

Lowest is the superlative of low which can be used to describe number and percentage.

Least is the superlative of less which cannot be used to describe number.

Least is more often used to describe adjectives and adverbs.

OK: a low number, the lower number, the lowest number 

NOT OK: less number, the least number*

 *except in certain specific contexts

‘less’ and ‘the least’

Plastic bags COST less than biodegradable ones.

Paper bags COST the LEAST.

Paper bags are the LEAST expensive.
